TWU Chamber Choir Sings at Olympic Torch Relay Celebration

Langley, BC— As Vancouver counts down to the 2010 Olympic Games, the TWU Chamber Choir prepares for the games in its own way. The Chamber Choir, directed by Dr. David Rushton, is rehearsing the Olympic Torch Relay Anthem to be performed at the Langley Events Centre on February 8th as a part of the Olympic Torch Relay celebration.

Although no stranger to large stages, as evidenced by the
Chamber Choir’s participation in biannual sold-out performances at the Chan Centre for Performing Arts, the Choir’s opportunity to sing as part of the Olympic Relay event is a unique one. They will be featuring the choral piece “There’s a Light/ Cette flamme” composed specially for the 2010 Torch Relay by Quebec-based musician and award-wining youth choral conductor Gregory Charles.

"I am very excited that the TWU Choir is able to take part in the Olympic Torch Event,” says fourth year music major and Chamber Choir singer Laura Hastings. “The incorporation of English and French in the piece of music that we will be performing celebrates Canada's diversity while promoting freedom and unity. I am very proud to be part of such a milestone event in Canada's history.”

The TWU Chamber Choir is among other local performers invited to be a part of the outdoor event which runs from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm, during which time the torch will pass through Langley on its way to Vancouver.

Rushton echoes the choir’s enthusiasm about the event. “The TWU Chamber Choir is grateful for the opportunity to participate in Langley’s celebration as the Olympic Torch passes through our community.”

The choir won’t be the only TWU presence at the event. Spartans soccer and basketball players will be running children’s activities from 1-5 pm, giving school kids a chance to shoot some hoops or score some goals with the Spartans.
