TWU breaks ground on $3.3-million expansion to Neufeld Science Centre

Mayor Rick Green, Township of Langley, and Mayor Peter Fassbender, City of Langley, joined President of Trinity Western University, Jonathan Raymond, Ph.D., to break ground on a $3.3-million expansion to TWU’s Neufeld Science Centre that will provide 8,624 square feet of science and technology research labs and teaching space for the University’s Nursing, Chemistry and Biology programs.

The expansion – co-funded by the federal Knowledge Infrastructure Program, through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, with matching contributions from the Murdock Charitable Trust and the Arthur J E Child Foundation – will increase TWU’s science and technology research capacity, research and industry partnerships, advanced training of highly qualified personnel, and ability to generate Canadian health and environmental benefits and products.

“This is a great day,” said Dr. Raymond, “it recognizes the world class research going on in Trinity Western University laboratories and signifies that there is more to come.”

Built in 1964 and then extended in 1993, the Neufeld Science Centre was originally planned as a teaching space. With research gaining momentum since 2000 the expansion is necessary to support the advanced training generated by TWU researchers in science and health sciences – including Canada Research Chair Eve Stringham, Ph.D., and her work utilizing the spinning disk confocal microscope that TWU purchased with a 2007 grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation Leaders Opportunity Fund and is the only one of its kind in the Fraser Valley.

New facilities to include: Animal Care Facility, NMR Equipment Room, Chemistry Research Laboratories, Tissue Culture Room, Biology Research Laboratory, Nursing Laboratory Expansion and offices for Graduate students and research personnel.

Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, Ka Yin Leung, Ph.D., concluded, “The Neufeld expansion is very much in support of the TWU vision statement for research – that Trinity Western University supports high quality research and scholarship, providing venues and resources for reflection and dialogue on the meaning and value of truth that leads to positive action in the world.”

Trinity Western University, in Langley, BC, is a Christian liberal arts, sciences, and professional studies university, enrolling approximately 4000 students.
