Provincial
These rankings come from the Conservation Data Centre and are based solely on the organism’s status within British Columbia. A simplified view of this ranking system includes Red-listed and Blue-listed species.
| Category | Description |
| Red-listed | includes species which have been been legally designated as Endangered or Threatened under the Wildlife Act, are extirpated, or are candidates for such designation |
| Blue-listed | includes species not immediately threatened, but of special concern because of characteristics that make them particularly sensitive to human activities or natural events |
| Exotic | includes species that have moved beyond their natural range as a result of human activity; also known as introduced or non-native species |
| Unknown | conservation status of these species is unknown |
National
These rankings come from the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and are broken down into the following categories:
| Category | Description |
| Extinct (X) | A wildlife species that no longer exists |
| Extirpated (XT) | A wildlife species no longer existing in the wild in Canada, but occurring elsewhere |
| Endangered (E) | A wildlife species facing imminent extirpation or extinction |
| Threatened (T) | A wildlife species likely to become endangered if limiting factors are not reversed |
| Special Concern (SC) | A wildlife species that may become a threatened or an endangered species because of a combination of biological characteristics and identified threats |
| Data Deficient (DD) | A wildlife species for which there is inadequate information to make a direct, or indirect, assessment of its risk of extinction |
| Not At Risk (NAR) | A wildlife species that has been evaluated and found to be not at risk of extinction given the current circumstances |
