What will your Grade 4 class learn?
Students will participate in scientific experimentation and observation. These hands-on activities complement Grade 4 (open to classes of other grades studying salmon and eco-systems) life sciences curriculum. Outdoor activities and exercises will enable students to develop detailed responses to the following key questions:
- What do salmon need to live?
- How does the natural environment provide a good salmon habitat?
- What are some sign of good or poor salmon habitat?
Your class will also learn about:
- The basic salmon life cycle
- How streams act as salmon nurseries
- Salmon habitat needs and limits
- Water quality
- Simple food chains
- How forests provide shelter for salmon
Key Elements
Through this field experience students will be able to develop a detailed response to the following key questions:
- What do salmon need to live?
- How does the natural environment provide good salmon good habitat?
- What are some indicators of good/poor salmon habitat?
This curriculum also covers the following topics:
- Basic salmon life cycle
- Streams as salmon nurseries
- Salmon habitat needs and limits
- Water quality: Turbidity, pH, runoff, temperature, oxygen, chemical pollution.
- Simple food chains, and salmon food chain
- Stream invertebrates as salmon food and indicators of good water quality
- Forests as a provider of shelter for salmon
