What NOT to bring

Please pack carefully. Only modest space is available for personal items since you will share your space with roommates. There is limited storage for extra boxes and luggage. Closet and dresser space in your room is adequate but limited. Please be considerate of your roommates by packing only the essentials.

You will not need to bring kitchen or cooking items as the kitchen has all the appliances and dishes necessary.

There is no need to bring everything you would normally take with you to your dorm for the whole school year. You will be at the LLC for only three months. Keep in mind that there is a DVD/VCR and TV in the student lounge and that there is no desk space in dorm rooms for desktop computers or printers.

You will not need a car since the LLC is located downtown Ottawa with convenient access to the transit system and has excellent walking and bike paths throughout the city. There is limited student parking available in the Winter semester and NO student parking available in the Spring semester. Please contact the Community Life Coorinator in advance if you want to make arrangements for parking.

Internship Dress Expectations

What you will wear at your internship placement depends on the type of placement. Political offices are usually quite formal, requiring suits or sports jackets when Parliament is sitting. However, they go to casual, or even jeans, when Parliament is recessed. NGO placements are usually business casual (dockers or chinos) or even casual (jeans), depending on the office. In the Spring semester, you can expect cold temperatures (below -20 Celsius) and snow and ice. You will need adequate winter clothing including coat, hat, gloves and winter boots (preferably waterproof).

During Orientation Week (your first week at the LLC), you will have a full day session with Catherine Bell, an image consultant. She will give you advice on dress expectations, along with personal introductions and surviving receptions. If you are buying new clothes for the LLC, you may wish to wait to buy at least some of your clothes until after Orientation Week.
