Churches

In the early 19th century, the future site of Canada's capital was a mix of lumber camps and army barracks for soldiers and laborers working to construct the Rideau Canal. Some of the earliest buildings were churches: Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church (1839) served the French Canadian and Irish laborers living in "Lowertown," and St. Andrews Presbyterian (1828) and Christ Church Anglican Cathedral served the growing community of Protestant engineers and craftsmen.

Today, a range of denominations, and worship styles are available. The Christian community in Ottawa reflects the citys roots: there is a strong Roman Catholic presence, as well as established Protestant denominations; and the overall culture is more traditional than found, for example, in B.C.s Lower Mainland.

Students are encouraged to worship and participate in local church communities of your choice. The following list indicates some churches, most within walking distance, where past and present LLC students have attended (the list is not exhaustive and does not constitute a recommendation).
