The School of Nursing and the Christian Nurses Fellowship hosted a symposium on Faith and Nursing at the LLC on June 12.
Last year, the School of Nursing launched a Masters program. The first class spent a week at the LLC in June, taking a course in Health Care Policy. They toured Parliament, met MP Mark Warawa, heard from officials from CIHR, CIDA, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Institute for Health Information. They also toured the Canadian Nurses Association.
For the third year in a row, a group of 23 Business students came to the LLC for a two week "Law in Ottawa" travel study May 2-16. The students toured Parliament, had lunch with MP John McKay and heard from the Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism, Rob Moore. On the law side, they sat in on a Supreme Court of Canada hearing, had a session at the Competition Tribunal and heard from Tax Court Justice Patrick Boyle.
The LLC Spring Gala Fundraising Dinner on April 17, raised $2,400 in support of the restoration of the brick work on our beautiful heritage building.
LLC Director Janet Epp Buckingham has published an article in the on-line Comment magazine titled Canada at 150.
On March 5-6, LLC Director Janet Epp Buckingham participated in a policy dialogue organized for the Ontario Human Rights Commission. She delivered a paper on the interpretation of "discrimination on the basis of creed" in Ontario, which was responded to by Prof. Richard Moon of the University of Windsor Law School.
LLC Director Janet Epp Buckingham delivered the annual Mel Smith Lecture at Trinity Western University on Thursday, March 4. Her topic was "Grain Trucks, Graven Images and Grave Consequences: the impact of the Charter on religious minorities."
Speaking from his wealth of political experience, the Honorable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, addressed the students of the LLC at a February 23rd reception, challenging them to take advantage of every opportunity to shape the culture and public policy of Canada. Minister MacKay, who was elected to Parliament at the age of 31, has held the high profile portfolios of Foreign Affairs and National Defence all before the age of 45. Following his address, Minister MacKay answered questions about his experience in a military boot camp, his vision for the future of Canadian foreign policy, and the evolving perception of the Canadian military in the public eye.
It has become something of a tradition for Minister MacKay to speak with LLC students. This year’s reception was held at the Booth mansion and was organized by LLC student Marian Yutronkie, who is currently interning at the Ministry of National Defence.

LLC Director, Janet Epp Buckingham, will speak on "Religious Freedom in Canada" at the Ottawa/Gatineau Christian Legal Fellowship meeting on January 26, 12 noon at the board room at 85 Albert St., Ottawa.
LLC Director, Janet Epp Buckingham, was the featured speaker at the annual Faith@Work seminar in Ottawa. This seminar is hosted by the Public Service Christian Fellowship.
The Laurentian Leadership Centre is co-hosting a conference initiated by the Manning Centre for Building Democracy. Wilberforce Weekend Ottawa is a national seminar to explore and enhance transformative cultural and public policy advocacy supporting people with disabilities, those chronically ill, dying, or otherwise medically at risk. LLC Director Janet Epp Buckingham will be facilitating a seminar on legal initiatives. Some LLC students will be participating.
Dr. Haluza-DeLay is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the King's University College, Edmonton. He is co-author of an important new book, Speaking for Ourselves: Environmental Justice in Canada. His research interestes include environmental sociology and environmental justice as well as community development.
Dr. Clements is the Chair of the Environmental Studies program at Trinity Western University. He studies invasive species and their impact on the environment. he is the Chair of the Board of A Rocha Canada. He brings Christian theology to bear on environmental stewardship.
On Monday, August 10, Ottawa MP Royal Galipeau announced that the LLC would receive $25,000 in cost-sharing funding for building restoration. See the official press release here.
