ACTS Offers Master of Arts Program in Marriage & Family Therapy
From the day a newborn is brought home from the hospital, it enters a web of family relationships that are occasionally complicated, often difficult, and always meaningful.
A new counselling program at ACTS Seminaries of Trinity Western University will focus on understanding and treating people not only as individuals, but also within family relationships. The MA in Marriage and Family Therapy was approved by the Ministry of Education, and will replace the Master of Counselling program at ACTS in fall 2009 (Trinity Western will continue the ma in Counselling Psychology).
Program developer Ian Verseveldt, Ph.D., assistant professor of counselling, and chair of the Master of Counselling program, believes in the power of various kinds of family relationships and the importance of understanding those relationships. “Our society is made up of families in many different forms, and marriage and family therapist (MFT) training is specialized to work with relationships in their unique context. Once the mental health community understands what MTFs can do, they often specifically ask for MFTs.” Verseveldt hopes the new program will fill the growing need for counsellors able to work with family groups.
