Reaching for the Summer Games
Music major creates theme song for the 2008
Saskatchewan Summer Games

A TWU dorm room was transformed into a music studio this past year when third-year music major Laura Hastings wrote and produced a song for the 2008 Saskatchewan Summer Games. Inspired by the theme of the Games — reaching for your dreams — Hastings composed the song Reaching which was chosen to open and close the Summer Games, and was used in television and radio ads.
Hastings was aided by fellow students Brian and Caleb Chan and their company Lion the Cub Productions. Hastings calls the Chan brothers “musical extraordinaires.”
While Hastings has been composing music since grade seven and has a debut album entitled Butterfly, she admits that this was an intimidating project, as most of her compositions have been more melancholy. But when the songstress and composer put her fingers to the keys one winter night, the song just flowed out.
How much “reach” does she hope her song has?
“I just want people to like it,” says the humble Hastings. “I hope that it leads to more endeavours like this because I really enjoyed the process.”
