Rock Out and Rise Up
Student consortium releases first video game

A unique partnership enabled TWU students to release a first-of-its-kind project — a computer-based video game entitled Label: Rise of Band.
Spearheaded by Professors Alma Barranco-Mendoza and Kevin Schut, 24 students from diverse disciplines spent more than a year developing the game, which was released June 26, 2008.
Students in computing sciences did the software engineering, art students created original artwork, music students composed and recorded the music, communications students wrote the game’s narrative, and business students were responsible for the business plan.
The creation of this strategy game, which allows players to run an independent music label in an attempt to defeat the evil mega-corporation controlling the town’s music scene, was a unique experience for both staff and students. The process fostered interconnectivity between disciplines based on Schut’s belief that “the students are the experts in their fields.”
