Budding Artists Bloom at Second Annual Arts Expo

On October 31, 2008, TWU’s Faculty of Professional Studies and Performing Arts (FPSPA) opened its doors to budding artists in the Langley area. In one room, 10 high school students took in the sights and sounds of the multi-sensory art show, entitled “Birdscapes,” as they learned about the process involved in creating a collaborative art project. The show profiled the works of professors Doris Auxier, MFA; Claire Goodfellow, MA; and Jeff Warren, MA. In the “Movement Madness” workshop, shoes and socks were thrown aside as students explored various ways to express themselves through movement.

Over 100 high school students attended this year’s Expo. They wrote and scored music for film and video games, viewed a professional art show, created their own art work, attended a theatre performance, and engaged in creative writing and game design workshops.

Some of the students who attended this year’s Arts Expo were members of Sue Contant’s art classes at Langley Christian School. This is the second year that Contant has brought her students to the Expo. “It’s a great opportunity for grade 11 and 12 art students to see senior students’ work and to hear student artists talk about the process involved in art,” she says, especially when they are starting to think about what to do after high school graduation and may be considering a career in the arts.

FPSPA Dean, David Squires, Ph.D., explains that the “Arts Expo is a gift to high school students in the Lower Mainland. It is an opportunity for students interested in the arts to work closely with professors and university students in workshops on various aspects of their artistic craft.”
