Looking for Leaders

New MAL scholarship is designed to strengthen ties to BC Aboriginal communities

Long before the idea of TWU was ever conceived, First Nations tribes like the Sto:lo and Kwantlen nations traveled the Salmon River to fish, trade and hold community gatherings. Centuries later TWU and Canadian Pacific use this rich historic soil as a place for higher education and rail transportation. Not wanting to forget this significant land nor the communities that once thrived on it, the University launched an Indigenous Peoples Task Force in 2009 with a mandate to establish better and supportive relations with First Nations communities.

TWU Adjunct Professor Paul Kariya, who sits on the Task Force and who lectures on salmon sustainability and aboriginal community economic development, is committed to developing projects that would be a good fit for TWU and the Aboriginal community. “We wanted to share our University resources to assist Indigenous peoples with their development and advancement,” says Kariya.

The result is the creation of a unique scholarship. The Canadian Pacific Aboriginal Leadership Scholarship, worth $23,500, will be given to an Aboriginal student admitted to the Master of Arts in Leadership program at TWU . The scholarship is made possible with the support of Canadian Pacific.

“For First Nations to secure their rightful place in Canada, strong partnerships need to be developed between them and various sectors in society. TWU is committed to building partnerships with indigenous peoples in ways that help them develop leadership in various spheres,” says Kariya. “The CP Aboriginal Leadership Scholarship is a great example of the private business sector partnering with TWU to assist the University in fulfilling its role.”

Closing date for application to the CP Aboriginal Leadership Scholarship is May 1, 2010. Apply online or contact Financial Aid 604.513.2031
