Recent awards, appointments, and promotions

Janet Epp-Buckingham, LL.D.; Mark McKay, Ph.D.; Darlane Pankratz, RN, BSN, MSN; and Sara Pearson, Ph.D., have been awarded tenure at TWU.

Julia Mills, Ph.D., has been awarded a Murdock College Research Program for Life Sciences (Murdock Charitable Trust) research grant of $48,500 for two years. Mills will investigate the “Role of ILK in the Differentiation and Progression of Retinoblastomas Scientific Research.”

Sara Pearson, Ph.D., received a SSHRC Institutional Grant to present a paper entitled, “The Brontës and the Bible: Influences both Literary and Religious,” at the Brontë Society Conference, held at Homerton College, Cambridge, UK, in August 2011.

Rick Sawatzky, RN, Ph.D., (co-investigator), Kelli Stadjuhar, Ph.D., (principal investigator, University of Victoria) and Carolyn Taylor (co-investigator, Director – End of Life Care, Fraser Health Authority) received a four-year grant totaling $800,000 from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research BC Nursing Research Initiative to study the “Impacts of a Palliative Approach for Nursing.”

Tracy Stobbe, Ph.D., received a TWU Internal Grant of $3,000 to address the topic: “Who Shops at Farmers’ Markets? A spatial investigation into the customer base of urban and urban-fringe markets.” In Summer 2011, Stobbe—with the assistance of fourth-year business student, Breanna Siebring—collected data through surveys of five Farmers’ Markets in Langley, Abbotsford, Surrey, Kitsilano, and Commercial Drive.

In collaboration with Michigan State University and Cornell University, Karen Steensma, MSc, has been awarded a USDA research grant. TWU’s portion of the grant is $300,000 over three years. By soliciting financial commitments from agricultural stakeholders in support of the grant application, Steensma was able to raise an additional $3 million. The grant will enhance her bird damage research in the Pacific Northwest.

Peter Flint, Ph.D., has had another seven-year term as Canada Research Chair in Dead Sea Scrolls Studies renewed—amounting to $200,000 of funding per year.

Jens Zimmermann, Ph.D., has had another five-year term renewed as Canada Research Chair in Interpretation, Religion and Culture, amounting to $100,000 of funding per year.
