Info for American Students

Studying in Canada is a great opportunity for US students. It’s an international experience close to home where you really get to see the US, and the world, from a different perspective. You can get to know a whole new culture without ever leaving the continent or learning a new language, however, you may develop a Canadian accent!

Here are answers to common questions we get from new students.  Of course, we are more than happy to answer any other question that you may have.

Do I need a Canadian study permit?
Yes, and it is an easy process for US students.  You can apply for your study permit when you arrive in Canada at a point of entry. More about study permits

How can I set up a Canadian Bank Account?
The Royal Bank of Canada will be on campus for Orientation Day to set up student accounts. RBC has an ATM on campus, so it is the easiest bank to use since students can withdraw money on campus without any fees.

How can I get a Canadian cell phone?
You probably don’t need to. Cell phones are usually more expensive in Canada. The best option is to get a US plan that includes service in and to Canada. That way parents and friends can call the student on a local number and the student can call home. Students will have a phone in their dorm for local Canadian calls. There will be a cell phone provider on campus for Orientation Day.

What stores are nearby?
Wal-Mart is a great place to get last minute dorm supplies and is about 7 minutes away from campus. The Willowbrook Shopping Centre has everything you would need and is only 10 minutes away.

When do I find out about my room assignment and roommate?
Room assignments are given out on O-Day, but most requests for buildings or certain dorms are granted. Roommate assignments are given in late July, but we take great care in matching roommates, so if a good match is not found, some students will not be matched until later when more students have applied for housing.

Do I need to get Canadian car insurance?
No. Most US insurance policies will cover you while temporarily living in Canada, but it’s best to check for your individual plan.

How do I apply for loans?
Applications for Stafford and Parent PLUS Loans are now open. If you are planning to use a student loan for tuition payments you should apply now
