Because of the practical nature of Athletic Therapy, students will complete on-field practicum placements while in their first and second years at TWU, and extensive clinical and on-field placements in their third year at MRC and their fourth year upon return to TWU.
While at TWU, Athletic Therapy students will have the opportunity to work under the supervision of the head Athletic Therapist in the TWU Athletic Therapy clinic. Students will also have the opportunity to work and travel with the TWU Spartan teams who compete at the C.I.S. (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) level. Working and traveling with the Spartan's teams and experiencing high level C.I.S. competition across the Nation is an exciting experience for aspiring Athletic Therapists.
While in their third year at Mount Royal College, TWU Athletic Therapy students will have further opportunities to complete clinical and on-field practicum experiences with teams from the Calgary area including the Mount Royal Cougars, SAIT Trojans and high school football and wrestling.
All practicum experiences completed by Athletic Therapy students are done under the supervision of certified Athletic Therapists or related professionals. Practicum placements make up a large component of Athletic Therapy learning as students must complete a total of 1,200 practicum hours (600 clinical and 600 field) to qualify to write their C.A.T.A. certification exams. Athletic Therapy students can begin to collect their 1,200 practicum hours once they begin their third year at MRC and become members of C.A.T.A..
