On reviewing the overall level of interest in the MA TESOL, Trinity Western University has decided it will no longer be accepting new applications into this program.
However, several of the outcomes of the program can be met through the MA in Linguistics, the MA in Educational Studies—Special Education or the MA in Educational Leadership programs, and we encourage you to explore these options.
These programs all offer courses where you will engage with language, language learning, education, and teaching methodologies much like the MA TESOL. They will provide you with the knowledge and skills to progress in a career in this field.

TWU MATESOL alumni contribute to the world of TESOL as teachers, materials developers, teacher-trainers, and administrators in English programs for both adults and youth in a variety of international and local contexts.
Students have a choice between an intensive 16-20 month resident track and a 2-3 year online track that may be completed while working as a teacher. The majority of the students are required to do an internship in their final semester. Small class size and warm relationships with faculty, collaborating instructors, and fellow learners characterize both the online and on-campus cohorts.
The TWU MATESOL program meets accreditation eligibility requirements for both TESL Ontario and TESL Canada, Professional Standard Three. With these professional credentials, TWU graduates are well-equipped to teach in English language programs for adults in Canada and abroad.
Resident and online tracks
Full-time students can complete the program on campus in 16-20 months. Alternatively, the online track may be completed in two to three years while working. Most students do an internship in their final semester. Small class size and warm relationships with faculty and fellow learners characterize the learning experience of both cohorts.
Not traditional lecture-based
The MATESOL program is built upon a problem - based process with students critically examining ideas, theories and methods relevant to TESOL.
Courses revolve around research and case study application. Working in teams, participants research and then report their findings to the rest of the cohort. Students of diverse worldviews and cultural backgrounds share their unique perspectives during this collaborative process, creating a rich setting for both personal and professional development.
The 12-14-week internship can potentially be completed in Canada or internationally, depending on previous teaching experience and interest. Students arrange for internship placements in consultation with the internship program coordinator. Upon program completion, international students may be eligible to apply for an extended work visa in Canada. Students interested in pursuing this are strongly encouraged to seek advice from a certified immigration consultant.
After all other degree requirements have been met, an additional, optional 12-credit thesis (up to 24 months) is available.
