Student Opportunities

Creative Leadership Opportunities

On-campus creative leadership opportunities abound, including paid TA positions (for studio, design, community, and gallery). Since full-time faculty studios are on campus, students can witness faculty as they engage in their own research activities and take advantage of opportunities to assist or collaborate on their projects. For additional resumé-building experience, students also have many opportunities to work as a member of the creative staff for one of several on-campus publications, providing them with the valuable experience of working in a fast-paced interdisciplinary team setting.

Weekly Colloquium

Art + Design majors attend a weekly colloquium (ART 180) course where they have the opportunity to engage with guest speakers and visiting artists, often in the context of exhibitions (both on and off-campus)

Field Placements (Co-ops, Internships, etc.)

Students are able to gain valuable work experience (while receiving course credit) for working alongside practicing professionals at various sites such as design studios, visual art studios, museums, galleries or community arts organizations. Students have benefited from placements at the Reach Gallery Museum, The Fort Gallery, Good Marketers Group, the Surrey Art Gallery, the Contemporary Art Gallery, and numerous other for-profit and non-profit locations. The Art + Design program is always seeking to develop active relationships and partnerships throughout the lower mainland region.

Interdisciplinary Travel Studies

Periodically, travel studies are offered for majors within SAMC (including Art + Design). Students are encouraged to think critically and reflectively about the gifts of human creativity as expressed in the visual arts, theatre, dance and music. On-site lectures/discussions, visits to art galleries and museums, and attendance at a number of concerts and plays challenge students to deeply engage with the historical, religious, and societal backgrounds of the work. Through this lens, students explore the role of the arts in both illuminating and enriching their lives.
