Student Opportunities

Internships and Co-ops

Internships and co-op placements are incorporated into the Biotechnology programs to give students marketable skills and an employment advantage.

The first internship (BIOT 100) is an on-site lecture and laboratory course designed to provide students with a general knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and basic laboratory skills that can be used within the Life Sciences sector.  The second internship (BIOT 200) is a workplace practicum that is done on or off campus and will also be taken for credit. Second year internships include placements in healthcare, veterinary medicine, local biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, medical research laboratories and HR firms.

The co-op placements consist of 4 months of full-time, paid, employment.

Placements are usually offered in the summer months but may also be available during Fall and Spring semesters. Registration and evaluation of Biotechnology co-ops will occur within the Biology Department.
Additional support for career development is available from the Centre for Calling and Career Development.
