CanIL Colloquium, Andy F, Presents, “For Heaven’s Sake! Notions of Accuracy and Audience in Rendering ‘Third Heaven’ (2 Corinthians 12:2)”
Accuracy in Bible translation is often viewed as the degree to which a translated text parallels the lexical items and syntactic structures of the original, leaving little or no place for the role of the new audience in the communication act.
The inadequacy of that stance will be illustrated from the process of translating 2 Corinthians 12 for a Muslim-background audience in Central Asia.
Several options will be evaluated from the perspectives of exegetical soundness and communication effectiveness.
