CANIL Presents a Linguistics Seminar, Dr. Cliff Goddard, “Taking Meanings Across Languages: A Practical Workshop on Lexicography, Translation, and Cross-Cultural Explanation”
Dr. Cliff Goddard, Professor in Linguistics, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia
How can we translate concepts and develop bilingual dictionaries (including lexicons for Biblical languages), and ensure we are communicating accurately and effectively across cultures with languages that slice the semantic pie differently?
The NSM (Natural Semantic Metalanguage) approach to semantics offers insights with its commitment to rigorously explaining concepts using natural language (“explications”), and its investigation of concepts that are universal across languages (“semantic primes” or “atoms”) and how those concepts are used to construct more complex “semantic molecules,” sometimes similarly but mostly differently across languages.
This practical workshop shows how to use this theory in translation and lexicography work “on the ground.”
