I’m in Canada now and studying for the Fall 2020 semester. Can I travel internationally and come back during Christmas break?

TWU will support the decision of any international student living on campus to travel home for the Christmas break. Keep in mind that the mandatory 14-day quarantine period remains a requirement of all travellers (including Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents) entering Canada from international locations (including the US).

Each student will receive an email with instructions on how to submit their quarantine plan with a link. If you did not see this email, you can also log in to your applicant portal (see “Access Quarantine Plan” button below). When you log in to your portal, you will see a COVID-19 Quarantine Plan survey link on the right-hand side of the page under Helpful Links. Please note: this is for both on- and off-campus quarantine plans.

I’m a new student and my program starts in Spring 2021 (January to April 2021). Can I take courses online from my home country?

International students do not need a study permit to legally start a program from outside of Canada; however, you will need one to begin studying in Canada once you are able to travel. We strongly recommend that you begin your study permit application process as soon as you can.

On August 26, 2020, IRCC updated their information for international during COVID-19.

IRCC is providing priority study-permit processing for students who have submitted a complete application online and has introduced a temporary two-stage approval process for incomplete applications, to ensure that permits are processed as quickly as possible.

In addition, the new measures allow students to count the time spent pursuing their studies online abroad toward their eligibility for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), if they submit a study permit application before the program starts and they cannot travel to Canada. To remain eligible for a PGWP, you may complete up to 50 percent of your studies online for most programs. The rest of your program must be completed in Canada. Students in programs that are 8 to 12 months starting in May or September 2020 may be eligible to complete more than 50 percent online. For full details, see how your PGWPP eligibility is affected.

I am a new student and my program starts in Spring 2021 (January to April 2021). What happens if I can’t get a study permit before January 2021?

New international students do not need a study permit to take online courses. You can have the time spent studying online count towards your post-graduation work permit if you submit an application before your program starts and complete no more than 50 percent of your program online from outside Canada.

If you are starting in Spring 2021 and your study permit is denied, you are eligible for a refund. Please contact your Enrolment Advisor or Admissions@twu.ca about your specific situation.
