Academic Accommodations

Academic accommodations are specific, recommended provisions that enable students with disabilities to have an equitable opportunity to meet course and program learning outcomes.

Factors that are considered when determining appropriate and reasonable accommodations are:

  • The nature of the disability
  • Severity and functional impact of the disability
  • Academic impact of the disability as reported by the student
  • Documentation from specialists who are qualified to diagnose the disability
  • Course, program, and discipline requirements

TWU’s Centre for Accessible Learning works on a model of self-advocacy.  Students with disabilities have a choice if they wish to  register with the Centre for Accessible Learning. In respecting student choice, we understand that students who do not self-identify have elected not to pursue academic accommodations.

Confidentiality

Documentation about student disabilities is confidential. Personal information collected by the Centre for Accessible Learning is subject to the Personal Information Protection Act, and TWU’s Privacy Policy, governed by the Registrar’s Office.

Information about a student’s registration with the Centre for Accessible Learning and recommended accommodations is only released to other TWU staff or faculty on a need-to-know basis. Faculty members are informed of the approved accommodations for a given student, but not their diagnosis or details of their disability.
