Trinity Western University’s new Director of Choral Activities Joel Tranquilla, DMA, leads off his first set of choral concerts in a program that explores the theme of light. Showcasing fifteen of the brightest singers at TWU, the hour-long evening performance titled “SHINE” features sacred music in English, German, Icelandic and Afrikaans on October 25 in Langley, and November 1 in Delta.
Tranquilla, an award-winning conductor and Langley resident who joined TWU’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture (SAMC) in August, has introduced this new concert as part of an ambitious series of choral events. “I’m excited about the opportunity to do such a wide range of music from different time periods and in different languages,” he said. “And chamber music is very intimate. It has a completely different feel than some our larger scale choral performances.”
The evening, sponsored by Long & McQuade, features a Bach cantata based on the familiar chorale tune “Nun danket alle Gott” (“Now Thank We All Our God”), which will be accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble. Also on the program are works by James MacMillan, Moses Hogan, and SAMC’s own David Squires, Ph.D., as well as a set of pieces each based on Psalm 42 by Handel, Palestrina, and Marty Nystrom. Edward Norman will accompany on organ and piano.
