Trinity Western Art + Design students are exhibiting their signature projects this spring. Called “Search Query,” this year’s Graduate Art Exhibition is showing April 8 to May 9 at the SAMC Gallery inside the TWU Norma Marion Alloway Library.
Calvin Bergen, from Abbotsford, is an Art + Design major. In his project, “Self-scan,” he uses a flatbed scanner to make still life images. He has found that the resulting images appear disjointed and distorted – resembling a “glitch” that is not unlike the feeling of the pandemic’s interruption on our collective lives.
Art + Design major Bethany Haynes explores themes of ownership, communication and confession in her project, "If I wrote 2 u would u write back?" The Vancouver Island native visited various abandoned sites, examined the objects left behind, and attempted to piece together the "hidden happenings" of these forlorn spaces.
Art + Design major Hayden Zimeng Huang, from China, went to take photographs of empty city streets during the pandemic lockdown. In his project, "Lonely City," he sought to explore the feeling of space, as well as distortion and disorder. He pieced his photographs into puzzle-like compositions; his collages formed newly imagined spaces. “The city is lonely. Fragile pieces, connected but disordered," he wrote in his project description. “I wake up at night and I know the loneliness will be there. It calls me out, it attracts me.”
