Upside-Down Christmas is an irreverent and open-hearted look at the holiday we think we know so well. A mischievous and musical revue that puts a colourful twist on the traditional Christmas variety show, it offers a fresh take on a familiar holiday and poses a question: can anything surprise us about Christmas? From intimate family portraits to uproarious bouts of comedy, Upside-Down Christmas explores the most wonderful time of the year from every angle.
The production is a collaborative effort of the cast and crew, all of whom are Trinity Western students. With a range of cultural backgrounds, the team has created a show that puts a twist on the familiar, with a nod those holidays that aren’t as picture-perfect as Christmas cards would have us believe.
Director Angela Konrad says that many of the scenes start with a familiar setting. “A Christmas concert, the Nativity scene—these are common elements of the holiday. But as the scenes progress, they may not go where the audience expects them to.”
“A lot of what the audience will see in the show sprang out of a single, funny idea or comment in rehearsal, one which snowballed into a fully formed scene,” reveals cast member Nyssa Morgan. “For an actor, this is very, very exciting.”
These simple jokes will take the audience on a sleigh ride of sentiments through the Christmas season. The show was created from the memories and experiences of the group, but audience members will have plenty to relate to as they see Christmas from new perspectives.
Cast member and Langley local Amaris Henry affirms, “There’s definitely something here for everybody.”
