Trinity Western University’s new music group, Trinity Worship Project is up for Praise and Worship Album of the Year tonight at the 40thAnnual Covenant Awards presented by the Gospel Music Association of Canada (GMA Canada) in Edmonton, AB.
Trinity Worship Project is one of six music groups nominated in this category that recognizes the best in original praise and worship music in Canada.
The Trinity Worship Project band was formed out of TWU’s Worship Arts program. Band members are TWU students and many are Worship Arts majors in the new Worship Arts program that launched in September 2017.
"We were both surprised, yet thrilled, for the Trinity Worship Project EP from 2018 to be nominated for a Covenant Award. It recognizes some of the hard and creative work done by our students to create the album, including the artwork by one of our students in the School of the Arts, Media + Culture,” says Johnny Markin, Worship Arts Instructor at TWU. “We are also pleased that two original compositions and a creative re-arrangement of a classic hymn were part of the project. Whatever the outcome, it is an exciting milestone for our Worship Arts program at TWU.”
Music producer and worship leader Johnny Markin is an instructor at TWU’s Worship Arts program as well as the Worship Pastor at Northview Community Church. He is also a Covenant Awards nominee (2005) for Praise and Worship Song of the Year.
In May 2018 Trinity Worship Project went on tour as the opening band for chart topping UK-based Christian music group Rend Collective on the band’s The Good News Tour: United Kingdom Part 2. The tour included some sold out shows as they performed in Cardiff, London, Manchester, Inverness, Glasgow, Belfast, and Dublin.
The Worship Arts program has already been recognized as one of the top worship studies programs in North America by Worship Leader magazine. Bart Millard, award-winning lead singer and songwriter with Mercy Me, serves as the program’s Senior Advisor lending his expertise to encourage emerging leaders in Christian music.
