TWU’s Good Morning Commuter program is back again, for the first time in over a year. This morning, as student and staff commuters entered campus, they were welcomed by French vanilla cappuccino, hot chocolate, coffee and donuts.
Michael Ezinga, is a student leader with TWU’s Commuter Programs. “We love bringing smiles to people’s faces,” he said.
He describes Good Morning Commuter as a way to help people who travel to and from campus feel a sense of community and belonging.
In addition to enjoying free breakfast treats, commuters can also play a game and be entered into a draw to win a $50 gift card prize.
“It’s a way for us to show people that they are welcome. It’s a way to build community, to meet new people,” said Ezinga, who is a third year Media and Communications major.
Especially during the winter, on an early morning when it’s cold and sometimes dark, Ezinga hopes “that people just have a good start to their day.”
As a Collegium Assistant, Ezinga and his teammates host one of TWU’s three campus collegiums. Collegiums are spacious student lounges, fully furnished with kitchens, tables, couches and quiet study areas.
It’s easy for commuters to arrive on campus for classes and leave immediately afterwards, without having much opportunity to connect with others, Ezinga noted. TWU’s Collegium Programs aims to provide that place for relationship and connection, in a “home away from home” setting on campus.
As a demonstration of hospitality, on cold mornings like today, Ezinga and other Collegium leaders are stationed on TWU’s main roadway, handing out hot beverages and caring for the community.
