Nursing Networking Café: “Negotiated Practice: An Anthropologist’s Perspective of Hospital Palliative Care”
Guest Speaker: Dr. Marian Krawczyk
The majority of Canadians spend their last days, and die, in a hospital. Increasingly these patients have some interaction with palliative specialists, or at minimum clinicians who use the principles of a palliative approach. Examining palliative care as a “culture”– a set of complex social practices – can help us to better understand how clinicians shape and collectively negotiate the experiences of dying, as well as the challenges they face within these institutional settings. Based on 10 years of experience, the conversation will be grounded in examples from local and international research.
