Chadron Mark Friesen, PhD

Professor of Chemistry; Chair, Department of Chemistry

Chadron M. Friesen was born in Säffle, Sweden but grew up in a rural town in south west Kansas (Meade). He received a BS and a BSE from John Brown University in Arkansas in 1995. Soon after teaching high school and doing a summer research stint, he pursued a PhD from the University of Alabama in fluorine and analytical chemistry underneath the direction of Dr. Joseph S. Thrasher. In 1998, he was employed at E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Inc. in New Jersey, USA under the supervision of Dr. Jon L. Howell to conduct research into new perfluoropolyalkylether (PFPAE) based lubricant additives for both high temperature stability and anti-corrosion inhibition in aerospace applications. In 2000, he accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Trinity Western University in British Columbia, Canada. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2005 and Full Professor in 2010. He has also been a visiting scientist in several locations including DuPont in New Jersey and Delaware in 2001 and 2007 and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier, France in 2013. Later in the summer of  2020, he received a U.S. Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) Summer Faculty Fellowship from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research to continue work in materials applicable to aerospace.

His current interests range from exploring new synthetic designs and methodologies to create novel fluorinated polymers for relevant industrial applications of today or to add specified and localized amounts of fluorine to pharmaceuticals. Critical to all of these pursuits is the isolation and structural determination of these new materials and products. He is also a member of the Division of Fluorine Chemistry of the American Chemical Society since 1996, served as Vice-Chair/Secretary (2009-2021),Chair  (2013), and Past-Chair (2014) for this division.  Outside of research, he volunteers for Scouts Canada.

    Expertise

    Key areas of focus in Industrial Fluorine Chemistry:

    • Anionic ring-opening polymerization of fluorinated and partially fluorinated epoxides; Perfluoropolyalkylethers (PFPAEs) for use in surfactants, theranostics, fluoropolmer coatings, and fluorous biphase catalysis;
    • Formation and the use of perfluoroalkoxides (PFAs) derived from hydrofluoroethers (HFEs)
    • Late-stage fluorination of pharmaceuticals
    • New Hydrofluoroethers (HFEs)
    • Multi functional Polymerization initiators

    Fluorine Chemistry Featuring Small Molecules and Fluoropolymers:

    Our research focuses on the development of mild methods of fluorination on small organic molecules, the reactivity of hydrofluoroethers with tertiary amines, as well as the development of new applications for novel derivatives of poly-hexafluoropropyleneoxide (poly HFPO).

    Small Molecule Chemistry:

    Our exploration of small molecule chemistry began with our efforts to prepare novel perfluoroalkoxide-based initiators for HFPO. We have previously reported the reactivity of perfluoroalkyl methyl ethers (a subset of hydrofluoroethers; HFEs) with tertiary amines, which produces perfluoroalkoxides. This led us to begin exploring the existing methods of synthesizing HFEs, and we found that there were very few existing methods. We were initially interested in the fluorodesulfuration of thionoesters as a means to accessing difluoroethers, but we found that thionoesters were challenging to make due to the limitations of Lawesson's reagent. This gave us the inspiration to develop the base-catalyzed transesterification of methyl thionoesters, which allows diverse thionoesters to be prepared from a simple starting material (see figure above).

    Due to the value of difluoroethers as potential radiotracers for [18F]-imaging, as well as their presence as drug leads, we became interested in methods of synthesizing difluoroethers as a valuable method beyond the preparation of initiators for HFPO. After some preliminary experiments we discovered that Ag(I)F is able to fluorinate thionoesters under extremely mild conditions.
