Grade 6 - Biology

Biology: Life Through a Looking Glass

The light microscope is a fundamental tool used by which biologists can observe, inquire, and make predictions/connections.

As cell biologist detectives, students will learn the importance of the microscope in the field of Biology and how this tool provides a greater insight into various aspects of Biology.

This will help students understand how to gain information from scientific inquiry, observation, and experiments. The stations are designed to kindle a curiosity about various aspects of biological life and incite personal interest in the field.

Students will see how cell staining helps to identify structures within organisms and discover other techniques of examining these internal structures and functions.

The field study content emphasis is on basic structures/functions and interconnectedness of body systems of multicellular and unicellular organisms.

Slides and specimens will be set up at microscopy stations accompanied by questions or activities designed to problem solve, encourage observational skills, and practice critical thinking.

Students will form discovery groups and cooperate to identify and make predictions about the structure of organisms and how they survive, reproduce, and interact with their environment in a representative species from one of the 5 Kingdoms.

The discovery groups will use characterizations and investigations to identify internal systems of various specimens, thus highlighting the variances that occur across all living organisms.

Teacher Assistants, who are TWU Education or Biology students, teach this field study at the Grade 6 level.
