Grade 7 - Chemistry

Chemistry: Matter Matters

All matter is made of particles (atoms or molecules) and are divided into two groups: pure substances and mixtures.
Students will have hands-on opportunities to separate components of mixtures using chromatography, will experiment with pH levels of acids and bases, and learn to group physical and chemical properties.
Students will learn to problem solve as they discover and experiment with chemicals and Chemistry Fundamentals in these areas:

1. Chromatography Students will learn that substances in mixtures are separated by various tests and experiments. They will use various techniques to demonstrate that overtime components and particles of mixtures spread out at various rates.

2. Properties of Matter
Different substances differ in their properties or characteristics. Through experiments, students will learn to measure and compare properties of matter such as density, colour and solubility.

3. Changes in Matter
Substances can undergo changes in two ways, physical changes and chemical changes. Students observe various chemical reactions and perform a small-scale reaction themselves.

4. Acids and Bases
Two very important types of chemicals are called acids and bases. Students encounter and measure the pH of various acids and bases from everyday life.

Throughout the field study students will work cooperatively as they observe, inquire, problem solve, and interact with the chemistry experiments.

Teacher Assistants, who are TWU Education or Chemistry students, teach this field study at the Grade 7 level.
