Join us for a guest lecture series on ancient Judaism & Christianity with a discussion of advanced research opportunities in these fields in Canada. The event will include a program of two papers with guest speakers from the Department of Religious Studies at McMaster University.
“Charity as a Theme in Some Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls” Daniel Machiela (PhD, University of Notre Dame) is Associate Professor of Early Judaism at McMaster University. His research focuses on ancient Jewish scriptural interpretation and the Dead Sea Scrolls. He has published two books on the Genesis Apocryphon from Cave 1 at Qumran and a number of articles on the Aramaic Qumran literature more broadly.
“A Leper in the Hands of an Angry Jesus.” Matthew
Thiessen (PhD, Duke University) is Associate Professor of New Testament at McMaster University. His research focuses on the rise of Christianity particularly as it relates to early Judaism. He has published two books with Oxford University Press on the topics of conversion in ancient Judaism and the Gentile problem in Paul’s writings.
This free event is open to faculty across campus as well as any current and prospective graduate students in bible and theology. The program is jointly hosted by the Master of Arts in Biblical Studies program and the Dead Sea Scrolls Institute.
