WHAT IS SLO WEEK?
Student Leader Orientation Week typically occurs from the Sunday to the Thursday before Labour Day. The week's purpose is really three fold: to provide information and training; to provide spiritual refreshment; and to provide an environment for students to build connections with each other and with staff.
WHO MAKES SLOW HAPPEN?
Student Life facilitates the week right from conceiving the theme to clean up from the Commissioning Night's events. The Student Life Division includes the Wellness Center, Community Life, Student Ministries, The Learning Commons (formerly Student Success Centre), Transition Programs and Student Leadership Development.
WHO IS SLOW FOR?
All student leaders with established leadership roles. The week is geared towards students with Student Life leadership roles. "Established" leadership roles refers to those student leaders who sign a student leadership covenant as part of their role. There are lots of TWU students who provide leadership on our campus but this training week is geared towards those with established roles. If you are in an established student leadership role this week is for you!
DO I HAVE TO ATTEND SLOW?
Yes, as a student leader, holding an establised leadership role, you are responsible for attending SLOW as a part of your leadership covenant. SLOW is geared towards helping you understand the expectations of leadership while empowering you to feel confident in your ability to lead others. Pertinent information is provided as well as training for your role as our desire is to see you succeed in your leadership experience. SLOW is a foundational week for you as a student leader.
CAN I WORK DURING SLOW?
No, we advise students who are participating in SLOW to not plan on also working during this time. The reason for this is that with so much information and learning attempting to also fit in work as well would be too much. Our hope is that student leaders would see this as a week for them to transition into being back at TWU and to fully commit themselves to the week.
CAN I SEE THE SCHEDULE FOR THE WEEK IN ADVANCE?
Yes, the schedule is posted on this website. You can click on the side menu to see the schedule.
ARE ALL STUDENT LEADERS TOGETHER FOR THE WEEK OR IN THEIR SPECIFIC GROUPS?
Both. You will have times of fellowship, spiritual refreshment, and community with all student leaders during times like our big group sessions while also participating in small group training sessions specifically tailored to your area of leadership.
IS THERE FREE TIME JUST TO HANG OUT WITH MY FRIENDS?
Sure. Obviously, we have many things planned for the week and your training as a leader is the primary concern but there are many times throughout the week where either free time is designated or you can plan on hanging out with friends (like over meals).
WHEN CAN I SHOW UP FOR SLOW?
Sunday, August 28th @ 1pm. Sunday is devoted to your registration & moving-in. We ask that you wait until early afternoon to show up. There will be plenty of time to register and move in over the afternoon.
(Those arriving before Sunday will need to find their own accommodations or be in contact with your staff leader well in advance to make arrangements on-campus.)
CAN I COME LATE?
No. Everyone is expected to be at the university on Sunday. If for some reason you have to be late it is your responsibility to clear this with your staff supervisor in advance. This is your week to bond with the rest of your leadership team, to be refreshed spiritually, and to gain the information and training that will help you succeed. As such we want to make every effort to ensure that there are no distractions associated with people coming and going during the week.
WHERE DO I REGISTER FOR SLOW?
Come by the Student Life office when you get to campus and we will make sure you are ready to go!
DO I BRING ANYTHING TO REGISTER?
Bring your medical information (BC Care Card) and your smiling faces : )
