Session: Knowing the Ultimate?: Examining Images of Christ in non-Western Cultures
This presentation is an illustrated lecture, featuring a series of slides about the person and life of Christ created by non-Western artists. What does Christ’s prophetic name Emmanuel—‘God with us’—mean, when envisioned by majority world painters, sculptors, and filmmakers? Can Jesus be authentically portrayed as an African, Asian, Latino…or Anglo-American? What do physical representations of Christ tell us about art as a vehicle for knowledge of the sacred and the supernatural?
Joanne is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Intercultural Studies Program at Trinity Western University. She has lived and worked in numerous non-Western contexts, especially in Central and South America and in Eastern Europe. Joanne holds degrees in both Religious Studies and in Social Sciences.
