Session: Knowing the Ultimate?: Examining Images of Christ in non-Western Cultures

This presentation is an illustrated lecture, featuring a series of slides about the person and life of Christ created by non-Western artists. What does Christ’s prophetic name Emmanuel—‘God with us’—mean, when envisioned by majority world painters, sculptors, and filmmakers? Can Jesus be authentically portrayed as an African, Asian, Latino…or Anglo-American? What do physical representations of Christ tell us about art as a vehicle for knowledge of the sacred and the supernatural?
