G. Cornelis (Kees) van Kooten, PhD, FRSC

Associate Professor of Business
I am a Christian economist who is drawn to the application of simple economic theory to real world problems, particularly those in the fields of agriculture, forestry, climate and energy. I find it intriguing to discover the unanticipated consequences of proposed public policies, particularly ones that, despite good intentions, harm the most vulnerable people in society.

G. Cornelis van Kooten has more than 35 years of experience in natural resource economics, including agricultural and forest economics, land-use management, mathematical programming, and, most recently, the economics of renewable energy and climate. Dr. van Kooten's interests range from agricultural and forest economics to development economics and computational economics. He has published more than 230 peer-reviewed journal articles and 55 book chapters; He is the author or co-author of eight books on natural resource economics, and a co-editor of four books. His book with Erwin H. Bulte entitled The Economics of Nature (Blackwell, 2000) is considered a classic reference for researchers in the field of wildlife and public land economics, and his 1995 paper in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics on the uptake of carbon in forest ecosystems is the standard reference in the field of terrestrial carbon offsets.
Dr. van Kooten has been a consultant to various governments and government agencies, the United Nations, the World Bank, the European Union, and a variety of non-governmental organizations, including the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the WWF. His numerous graduate students have gone on to work in the private sector, academia and government. He earned the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society’s Publication of Enduring Quality Award in 2011; in 2014, he won the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Research Excellence Award. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2023) and a Fellow of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society (2012).
