Trinity Western University’s Richmond campus welcomes its first Executive MBA (EMBA) cohort

Trinity Western University expands the Executive MBA (EMBA) program to its Richmond campus just one year after successfully launching the program in 2021 on its main campus in Langley, BC.

This fall, Trinity Western University brings the Executive MBA program to its Richmond campus after successfully launching the program in 2021 on its main campus in Langley, BC.

On September 9, 2022 the first cohort of EMBA Richmond students gathered with staff and faculty at the Richmond campus' Minoru location (305-5900 Minoru Blvd, Richmond, BC) to begin the semester together with a kick-off breakfast.

Kevin Sawatsky, Dean of the School of Business, greeted new students, “On behalf of TWU’s School of Business faculty, we welcome you and look forward to working with you.” He also highlighted the difference of an EMBA, noting, “In an Executive MBA program there is opportunity to learn from faculty, but also from the corporate experiences of EMBA colleagues, which results in a highly valuable education.”

As part of the distinctive of a TWU education, the EMBA program seeks to develop ethical and astute business leaders who are attentive to the values that are foundational to how people operate in the world, and how these values can be applied to create positive and dynamic change.

“I find safe solace knowing that TWU and I share the fundamental core values of what it means to be a Christian leader in a challenging and evolving world. As our cohort navigates through our first class, Christian Leadership and Ethics,
I know I am on the right path.”

— Eric Nicholl, EMBA Richmond cohort

Andrea Soberg, Professor of Human Resource Management and International Business, encouraged new students to build foundational wisdom, faith and discernment, adding, “You’ve come here to learn how to become better business people, to learn how to be successful, and to learn how to steward all the resources that an organization uses to achieve its mission, with wisdom and discernment. At TWU, we hope to help you gain greater insight into implementing best practices in all your business activities.”

Dr. Chen Liu, Director of MBA Programs, is thrilled to welcome the new cohort of EMBA students, who come from diverse industry backgrounds, including financial services, banking, accounting, marketing, and technology. “TWU’s Executive MBA program provides leaders with the knowledge, tools, and practices to excel in the current and coming contexts. We are thrilled that leaders from diverse areas and industries have chosen to study at TWU. The broad and international backgrounds of TWU students and faculty will serve to make learning together all the more expansive and enriching.”

“While pursuing the EMBA, I have learned how to improve my company's systems, establish a good corporate culture, build a sound HR system, and enhance operations and management, in order to lead the company’s direction and tactical strategies.”

Trinity Western University Richmond campus, Minoru location (305-5900 Minoru Blvd, Richmond, BC), now offers the EMBA program.

Lifelong pursuit of leadership development

A student in the Richmond cohort, Eric Nicholl had an immense desire to grow as a leader and believed that pursuing an EMBA would be the best path to enhance and develop the skillset he had built over his career in business thus far.

The show manager for the Vancouver International Boat Show and the next Vancouver International Auto Show said that his decision to apply to Trinity Western University came down to two specific components: TWU offered the only Christian and values-based MBA program in Canada, and the EMBA program best suited his schedule as a working professional, husband, and parent.

“I find safe solace knowing that TWU and I share the fundamental core values of what it means to be a Christian leader in a challenging and evolving world. God led me here to learn, share, and grow as a positive, encouraging, developing ambassador for change. As our cohort navigates through our first class, Christian Leadership and Ethics, I know I am on the right path,” Eric said.

“Although I expect great challenges from the program, it will be a short length of time that segues into a deeper, lifelong process of developing my self-awareness as a leader. As we journey together as a small group of like-minded peers sharing our experiences, I trust that the course teachings will be enriched on a practical level that could not be taught from the textbooks alone.”

Eric notes that the very first course in the program, Christian Leadership and Ethics taught by Dr. Mark Lee, has provided “real-life theory application [that] has already proven to be invaluable.”

Knowledge to lead a company's tactical strategies

Second-year EMBA student Cindy Liu is vice president of Amber Financial and formerly the president of the Rotary Club of Vancouver Centennial. She shares that “After one year of study, I have gained a lot of knowledge of enterprise management, improved my leadership, and learned how to lead a company to achieve great goals.”

“The professors are not only academics but also successful entrepreneurs,” she noted, “The professors perfectly combine theory and practice, providing learners with many well-known case studies and more space for independent thinking, so that students can become intelligent and creative entrepreneurs.”

As a vice president of a financial company, Cindy is applying what she has learned to propel her company to new heights. “While pursuing the EMBA, I have learned how to improve my company's systems, establish a good corporate culture, build a sound HR system, and enhance operations and management, in order to lead the company’s direction and tactical strategies.”
