Trinity Western’s Human Kinetics program is designed to give students the necessary theoretical foundations and practical experiences to be successful in teaching, coaching, and other recreational and human kinetics leadership positions.
“One who possesses scientific knowledge of human movement and exercise”
Predominantly based in function, rehabilitation and performance, kinesiologists can work in many different settings as exercise therapists, personal trainers, kinesiologists with companies and government departments and as sport coaches. Many also go onto train as physiotherapists, chiropractors and medical doctors. Students in this stream come from many different backgrounds but have a common interest in the biological basis of human structure, function and performance.
Students who graduate from the Kinesiology Stream are eligible to join the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists (BCAK) and are prepared to complete certification as fitness leaders in Weight Training and Personal Trainers with British Columbia Recreation and Parks. In addition students are prepared to write certification exams with the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and/or Certified Personal Trainer (CPT).
Within the Kinesiology Stream of the School of Human Kinetics, there is an option for students to specialize in Strength & Conditioning. This specialization is recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as an “approved educational program’- one of only three in Canada.
The demand for business professionals in the athletic world continues to expand as an area of impact on society. For the business-minded student who loves the world of sport and recreation, this stream offers training for those who desire to work in the field of sport management, public relations, marketing, business management, athletic leadership or municipal recreation.
Choose between a Bachelor of Human Kinetics (BHK) with a stream focus in Sport and Leisure Management or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sport and Leisure Management, which offers courses in public relations, communication and advanced marketing.
A community internship component gives students the opportunity to experience professional options available upon graduation. Organizations we have worked with in the past include: Athletes In Action, BC Lions, Langley Chiefs, Langley Sportsplex, Langley Twin Rinks, Vancouver Canucks and the Vancouver Giants.
Students taking the BA in Sport and Leisure Management are required to take 6 semester hours of internship experience, while students in the BHK stream may choose to do a 3 semester hour internship as part of the required leadership credits needed.
Sometimes, the future isn't so clear. You may be interested in many aspects of the Human Kinetics field, or you may need to learn more before committing to a specific stream.
That's why we've created the Generalist stream. For students who would like a professional degree, but would prefer to take a selection of courses most intriguing to them, students completing this stream graduate with a Bachelor of Human Kinetics degree. This gives a solid foundation upon which to build additional training and studies in a more concentrated area.
This stream is not recommended for those students who are planning on becoming schoolteachers in British Columbia.
