Student Care

Trinity Western University recognizes that students’ academic success is deeply connected to their well-being and what’s happening in their lives outside the classroom. While we cannot solve our students' challenges for them, we aim to ensure any student who is struggling is aware of and has access to the full slate of campus resources that may benefit them.

Student Care Alert (SCA)

A Student Care Alert (SCA) is an internal referral system designed to help students access services from multiple areas of the University when facing academic, physical, mental, social, financial, or other personal concerns. The primary goal is to mitigate negative outcomes as much as possible through proactive outreach and broad support.

The SCA is a tool through which staff and faculty, working as a team, can help identify the students’ needs, direct them to the most appropriate service(s), and provide additional follow-up over the course of the semester. A student with an SCA is NOT exempt from completing their coursework, attending class, or communicating with faculty.

Student engagement is expected throughout the process—in identifying concerns and possible solutions.

Important Information

  • Currently, referrals can be submitted by faculty and most staff through the Campus Portal. If a student feels they would benefit from an SCA, they can speak with any member of their faculty about their concerns and they can help start the process.
  • Information related to SCAs is confidential and not connected to a student’s academic record. This is an internal University tool designed to support students while they are at TWU. Information is shared only with faculty and staff involved in the student’s follow-up.
  • An SCA does not replace the Academic Accommodations or Temporary Concessions assessed by the Centre for Accessible Learning and/or the Learning Commons. On occasion, those formal processes do arise from the initiation of an SCA. In other contexts, the processes are already in place, and the SCA is an additional support tool for the student.
