A Call to Prayer

Dear Trinity Western University Community,

I write this at a time of considerable anxiety, loss, and sadness for many in our province. The stunning downpour and flooding over the past 48-hours have led to the loss of life and continue to threaten the lives, livelihood, property, family farms, businesses, and livestock of so many of our families, friends, and fellow citizens.

You may well be aware of the recent news that a catastrophic flood warning along with an evacuation order has been issued for Abbotsford's Sumas Prairie and surrounding areas. We have many students, families, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the University in and around the Abbotsford area who are profoundly impacted by these events—and we continue to stand with them in prayer.

At times like this, you will of course feel tremendous sadness for all whose lives, property, and livelihood are threatened by this terrible natural disaster. I share your deep sadness and concern for everyone involved.

I invite you to join me in prayer for all who are overwhelmed by the devastation and threat of loss.

“O Christ, who gathers what has been scattered, Shelter all who suffer and be
present to all in fear, loss, and grief.

Be present in the midst of this far-reaching pain, O Lord, for we are reeling again at
news of even greater flooding and loss.

Move our hearts to compassion, O Lord, that we would interact with casualties as
our own sisters and brothers, irreplaceable individuals whose losses will leave gaping
holes in homes, friendships, workplaces, churches, schools, organizations, and
neighbourhoods.

Be merciful O Lord,
Be present with all who face loss and fear,
Be with all who move toward this need:
the helpers, the first responders,
those who offer aid and protection, the pastors, the intercessors, those who meet
immediate practical needs, those who seek to heal physical and emotional wounds.

Even in the shadow of darkness,
Be with all who need your care and protection this evening, and throughout the
coming days.

Move Holy Spirit,
Lord and giver of Life,
Be present to all,
Protect and surround all with your care and mercy,
We ask, in your merciful and holy name,
Amen.

Sincerely,
