Equipping leaders with global business skills: TWU and Tianjin University of Finance and Economics renew 5-year partnership

Trinity Western University and Tianjin University of Finance and Economics (TUFE) have renewed a 5-year (2021-2025) agreement for the Great Wall International MBA, a jointly-run program between Trinity Western in Canada and TUFE in China. The partnership renewal was confirmed by a virtual signing ceremony on March 30, 2021.

On behalf of Trinity Western University, President Mark Husbands, Provost Bob Wood, School of Business Dean Kevin Sawatsky and MBA Director Chen Liu attended the signing ceremony from TWU’s board room in Langley, B.C.

Across the world in Tianjin, China, TUFE’s President Jinlan Liu, Vice President Hao Meng, MBA Center Dean Munong Yi, MBA Center Associate Dean Xin Sun, and MBA Director Liang Wang attended on behalf of TUFE.

TWU President Husbands remarked during the ceremony, “This Great Wall MBA program is increasingly seen both in Canada and in China as an exemplar of 21st century, quality, global partnership."

President Husbands affirmed that the Great Wall MBA program is a prime example of the global impact education can make, “The Great Wall MBA program has built a stellar reputation and vital network of relationships within China’s business community, especially in large cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin.”

“Our graduates are ambassadors of the quality of education that together, we are privileged to offer,” he said. “Their character, competence, and skill do much to advance the economic vitality of ongoing partnerships between China and Canada.”

President Husbands noted that the Great Wall MBA program marks the maturation of a 25-year relationship between Trinity Western University and the city of Tianjin. He said, “Over that time, we have witnessed the impact that global education makes in the lives of international students and the reciprocal impact students from around the world make on Canadian students.”

“Global education now plays a critical role in 21st century universities,” he said. “To develop the leaders of the future, global thinking skills and international experiences are crucial.”

TUFE’s President Liu responded, “Today, the two universities sign a new agreement from 2021 to 2025, opening a new page of cooperation. TUFE will guarantee the investment of resources in the Great Wall MBA program. I am full of confidence and expectation for the future development of the program and the cooperation between the two universities.”

In 2019, a delegation led by President Husbands traveled to China to celebrate the launch of the 12th cohort of the Great Wall MBA program at TUFE. That year, the joint MBA program between TWU and TUFE welcomed 120 students. Despite the challenges of a global pandemic, enrolment of Great Wall MBA program remains strong with 123 students entering the program in 2020.  

Since the Great Wall MBA program first started in 2013, it has grown into one of China’s top ten international MBA programs and is recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The Great Wall MBA program has educated around 460 students for 17 cohorts in the past 9 years. Graduate of the MBA program are highly successful as executives, professionals, and entrepreneurs and work as leaders in organizations such as fortune-500 companies, state-owned enterprises, national and local governments, and non-profits.

TWU’s School of Business is a proud member of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). TUFE’s MBA program is accredited by the UK’s Association of MBAs (AMBA). 

The Great Wall MBA program is delivered in English, with courses taught by expert faculty from TWU’s School of Business and TUFE. The program’s goal is to help students develop a global business perspective by studying in one of the world’s largest and fastest growing economies.
