In Memoriam: Dr. Jack Van Dyke

Honouring a life of service

Trinity Western University grieves the passing of our longtime colleague, mentor, and friend, Dr. Jack Van Dyke. Jack entered the presence of his Lord and Saviour on Saturday, Feb. 7, after a period of significant health challenges and dedicated care in the Abbotsford Hospital palliative unit.

Jack’s 32 years at TWU were marked by joyful service, deep conviction, and an unwavering commitment to cultivating both academic excellence and Christ‑centred development among his students. Joining what was then Trinity Western College in 1976, he served faithfully as a chemistry professor, chair of Natural Science, and later as dean of the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences. Under his leadership, the sciences at TWU grew in scope, influence, and academic strength, eventually representing nearly a quarter of all degrees offered.

Known for mentoring countless students, Jack made everyone feel welcomed, supported, and seen. His students and colleagues testify to how he gave his time generously, offered encouragement easily and often, and consistently integrated his faith in Christ with academic inquiry.

A heart for community & connection

Jack also carried a vision for community beyond the classroom, co‑founding the TWU Retirees’ Association in 2011 with Deane Downey and serving faithfully as its chair for many years. His commitment to this community reflected the same heart he brought to academia, rooted in Scripture, steadfast hope, and a life lived in service to Christ.

We continue to uphold Alice and the entire Van Dyke family in prayer as they navigate this season of loss while praising God for the comfort that comes from the assurance that Jack is in his glorious presence.
