Nursing graduate Brianne D. found community and a calling—at her doorstep

“Nursing puts you in this really unique position, where you see people in really tough moments of life. . . . I get to be the light and just be Christ's hands and feet in these moments.”

A natural choice

TWU Nursing graduate Brianne grew up in the Fraser Valley, so Trinity Western was close to home, and the choice to attend “felt very natural,” Brianne explains. The close proximity to her family made stepping into university studies that much easier. With the blessing of having her home nearby but living on campus, Brianne says, “I was able to develop and meet a lot of new people and just . . . grow into the person I am today.”

Called to nursing

For Brianne, the draw to study nursing came while in her youth. Growing up, she had watched her grandfather battle leukemia. That circumstance put her in a hospital setting at a young age, which ultimately sparked a desire in her to pursue nursing. “I just fell in love with it and knew that I wanted to do it,” she shares.

While in the Nursing program at TWU, Brianne found her professors to be a source of great encouragement. “If I was struggling in an area, they were always willing to meet with me one on one or just encourage me in other ways,” Brianne explains, expressing how much it meant to know that her professors cared about her beyond the coursework. The whole-person experience at TWU was also reflected in the small class sizes—an aspect of the program Brianne particularly appreciated, making it easy for her to connect both with classmates and professors thus building her confidence.

Growing friendships

Having dormmates and classmates from around the globe was something Brianne cherished in her time at TWU. “Trinity Western gave me so many lifelong friends—people that I still connect with today, and they're all over the world, which is really exciting to me,” she shares. She treasured having friends from so many places together in one location, where she could develop deep relationships. Brianne recognizes the unique way that community was created, having experienced so much together. Within that environment of community, Brianne says they were able to “challenge one another, push each other just to be better, and to support each other when needed as well.”

A light in the darkness

Currently working as a nurse in a children’s hospital, Brianne sees how she is being used to bring the light of Christ into what might otherwise feel like dark moments for her patients. With her education, her compassion for the sick, and her faith in Christ, Brianne helps and serves her patients with love.
