President's statement in remembrance of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Dear members of the TWU community,

Today we join with people around the world in mourning the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. With impeccable grace, dignity, warmth, and faith, Queen Elizabeth II offered the world a beautiful model of leading with care and empathy. We are deeply saddened by her parting and remain ever grateful for her devotion to the Commonwealth and its people.

We remember and honour the Queen’s example of faith and leadership. As a public figure, she spoke openly of her faith, as she once shared in a December 2020 Christmas broadcast, “For me the teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life.”

In a season of great uncertainty and isolation, the Queen drew our attention to the enduring hope and assurance of the Easter message, expressing, “The discovery of the risen Christ on the first Easter Day gave his followers new hope and fresh purpose, and we can all take heart from this...As dark as death can be—particularly for those suffering with grief—light and life are greater.”

As we receive the news of the Queen’s passing with sadness, we are deeply moved by her confidence in the promise and hope of resurrection. We are grateful to her service to this nation as Queen of Canada and Head of State, and we are indebted to her life and legacy as a global stateswoman and faithful believer.

Requiescat in pace.
