TWU awards honorary doctorate to Hugh Little

Trinity Western University celebrated Heward C. Little’s community contributions with a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the School of Graduate Studies graduation ceremony on November 7, 2015.

Little is highly esteemed in the non-profit world. He is the current chair of the board of Power to Change, a sponsor of the Christian Embassy of Canada, and a director of the West Coast Railway Association. He has held positions on the Board of Governors of Trinity Western University, the board of the TWU Crown Foundation, and the Loading Rules Committee of the Council of Forest Industries of B.C.

“He is a tireless contributor to Christian non-profit organizations,” said Bob Kuhn, TWU’s president. “He is truly a quietly inspiring person—unassuming, but inspiring.”

In addition to leading in the non-profit sector, Little is an accomplished entrepreneur. He started Westran Services Limited, which provides transportation services to lumber manufacturers, in 1983. The company has since expanded from New Westminster to include facilities in Surrey and Richmond.

Amidst his hard work, Hugh continues to be generous with his resources and time. “God has enabled him to be a very major financial supporter in the Lord’s work without expecting public recognition,” said Neil Snider, a former president of TWU.

For many, Little’s character is as impressive as his success. “Few people I know are more humble,” said Kuhn. “He has huge integrity and innovation, and a reputation for honesty.”

Little is a longtime supporter of TWU and a dedicated family man. Three of his four children, as well as three of their spouses, are TWU graduates. Two of his 12 grandchildren, including his oldest, are current TWU students.
