Community

The Art + Design program cultivates a vibrant interdisciplinary community of students, faculty, and creative professionals. This is a place where creative training, interpersonal collaboration, whole-person wellness, and one-on-one mentorship are treated with care. Our program equips and empowers every student to discover their unique creative voice so that they might inspire change, champion innovation, and lead real-world creative impact.

This is a small program where you won’t get lost in the crowd and where you can thrive in a community and make a real difference. Our program emphasizes academic rigour and cultural relevance while encouraging personal wellness and spiritual vitality. Whatever your background, this is a program where you can bring your full self to the table.

As Christians, we see community as an essential part of creating. In the Art + Design program, we intentionally cultivate community through many channels:

  • Studio Culture: Shared art studios and computer labs are available to students 24/7. The vibrant and supportive community that forms in the studios is a vital part of student learning and one of the most fun parts of studying art and design.
  • ART 180: Integration Forum: this unique class is taken every year by all art and design majors, facilitating connection and community between all students in the program and the wider Art + Design community. In this course, students make connections with professionals working in the field through guest lectures, conversations, and attending community events, exhibitions, and talks.
  • Campus Galleries & Art Events: Through our campus gallery programs, students connect with professional artists and share their work with the community. Our Jacobson Gallery is dedicated to presenting student work and initiatives. SAMC Gallery presents the work of professional artists and senior students. Several times a semester, the department gathers for opening receptions and artist talks.
  • Indigenous Initiatives: Art and Design students contribute in unique ways to Truth and Reconciliation initiatives on campus, particularly through creating protocol gifts for our Day of Learning and participating in exhibitions by Indigenous artists.
  • Travel Study: An immersive ten-day travel study where students connect with one another as they travel Berlin and collaborate on a group exhibition in a professional gallery space.
  • Art Club: A student-led, TWUSA sponsored initiative, providing a fun, informal space for all TWU students to create art together.
