Professional Preparation

We believe in the value of providing real-world, career-connected learning experiences to all our art and design students. These opportunities network students with creative professionals across a range of disciplines and provide valuable opportunities for portfolio preparation and the development of professional skills that will help graduates stand out.

You will engage in career-connected learning through various opportunities:

  • Field placements see students working and learning in the real world at galleries, museums, art consultancies, design studios, and community organizations.
  • Student publications like Pillar Yearbook and Mars’ Hill Student Magazine provide the opportunity to use your visual skills to produce digital and print publications.
  • Student worker roles provide on-campus work experience managing the art studios, mentoring peers in design skills, and working in the campus galleries under the mentorship of the gallery curator.
  • Student exhibition galleries provide ample opportunities to exhibit your work or even try your hand at curating an exhibition. There are two galleries on our Langley campus—one entirely dedicated to exhibiting student art.
  • Career preparation courses such as:
    • ART 180: Integration Forum connects students with art and design professionals in the region though a visiting lecture series, gallery visits, and engagement with the creative community.
    • ART 370: Professional Practices prepares students with skills like budgeting, grant writing, preparing a portfolio, marketing etc. to ensure you are prepared to thrive in your creative career.
    • ART 470: Applied Creative Studio gives students the opportunity to work on real client projects in a studio environment under the mentorship of an interdisciplinary teaching team.
  • Certificate in Arts Leadership & Entrepreneurship
