BFA alum Julie Casselman making music and more

Before graduating in 2013, Julie Casselman had already been given the opportunity to work in Vancouver, acting in Pacific Theatre’s The Great Divorce under the direction of Kyle Rideout (photo, left, by Ron Reed) and composing music for the world premiere of Scarlet Satin Productions’ [un]BOX[ed].

Julie was seen on the TWU stage in productions such as Romeo + Juliet, Emma, and The Skin of Our Teeth. She also sang the role of Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, a SAMC Theatre / SAMC Music co-production. Since graduation, Julie's acting chops have been in heavy demand. "I've been so excited to perform in several very different 'challenging-in-their-own-way' projects," says Julie. "After bridesmaiding it up back in AB, my summer was spent singing and dancing in Entrance Theatre’s Riverview High at the Firehall Arts Centre. Based on the Archie Comics, the musical is a fun, energetic, Vancouver-created piece of theatre!" Riverview, a new musical, won 6 Ovation Awards including Outstanding Production and sold out its first run at the Vancouver Fringe.

Julie's next project in the fall of 2013 was performing one of her dream roles as Mary Warren inThe Crucible with WRPC, and then went directly into a run of Moon Over Buffalo at the Metro Theatre. She also had a few laughs singing some of “musical theatre’s worst” in Say Whaa?!: the Musical Edition cabaret show and has enjoyed adjusting to the audition life over the past few months.

Next up, Julie will be composing original, sassy 1930’s style music for SAMC Theatre's production of Much Ado about Nothing, and she looks forward to seeing what else pops up for spring.
