On October 25, the best-kept secret of British comedy will kick off the season with big laughs and colourful costumes. SMASH, by Jeffrey Hatcher, is a smartly written story poking fun at love and politics. At a stylish all-girl school, most days revolve around boots, bicycles, and boyfriends…until a charming idealist sneaks his way onto campus, wooing women for a scheme to overthrow the government. Buckle up for a witty faceoff between socialism and capitalism, intermingled with some battle-of-the-sexes fun.
disPLACE: Refugee Stories in their Own Words, is a world premiere created by theatre artists at TWU. The show weaves together real-life experiences of refugees from a variety of cultures. Follow this theatrical journey to the heart of one of today’s most pressing social issues, onstage November 22 – December 3. Curious audience members interested in discussing the play can stay for an informative talkback following each performance. The November 30 performance also includes an educational event for high school students, parents, and teachers.
The New Year begins with a wintry tale by Nobel prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter. A Kind of Alaska is an intriguing, poetic mystery following one woman’s journey from sleeping sickness to a second chance at life. Her miraculous homecoming proves to be a mixed blessing as she pieces together the thirty years she missed. This contemporary classic plays for one week only, January 31 – February 4.
An adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s unforgettable romance, Jane Eyre, continues the tradition of spring musicals at TWU’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture. This beautifully moving masterpiece swept the Tony Awards in its 2001 debut and continues to enchant audiences around the world. The show runs March 14 – April 1 and advance booking is definitely a good idea.
