Trinity Western University Appoints James Tweedy as Vice President, Marketing and Communications and Chief Marketing Officer

Trinity Western University is pleased to appoint James Tweedy, MBA, as vice president of marketing and communications and chief marketing officer (CMO). 

As CMO, Mr. Tweedy is the chief steward of the institutional brand, playing a pivotal role in leading and empowering the institution to faithfully share the story of Trinity Western and invite people to participate in the life of the University.

The CMO reports directly to the president and serves on the Executive Leadership Team, highlighting the contribution of marketing and communications in guiding the University's overall success in fulfilling its mission, vision, and strategic plan.

James first joined the Executive Leadership Team in 2020, where he continues to serve, contributing strategic leadership and momentum to advance TWU’s distinct position within higher education as a global Christian university. He has also taught marketing courses in TWU’s School of Business since 2017.

Beginning his CMO role immediately, James brings over two decades of experience, leading brand, marketing, and communications strategy across many industries, including significant experience in the consulting, consumer product, and entertainment industries. He assumes this role after six years as TWU's executive director of marketing and communications, where he and his team focused on advancing and elevating the University brand within the global higher education market.

As executive director, James led institutional marketing, communications, and engagement strategies to enhance student and stakeholder engagement across the University to increase brand awareness, engagement, loyalty, and advocacy. He directed and continues to lead the University's brand strategy, institutional marketing and communications, enrolment and advancement marketing, creative services, digital and web-based platforms, and events and productions areas.

The University's new vision and brand launch are among Mr. Tweedy's high-impact achievements during his time with Trinity Western. After playing an integral role in helping to develop the first institutional vision statement in the history of the University, it was clear that the compelling new vision called for a renewed expression of the institutional brand—one that would effectively communicate its bold new vision. Leading up to the brand launch, James guided the campus community through an iterative and collaborative process, inviting broad stakeholder input from students, parents, donors, alumni, staff, faculty, and strategic partners. This thoughtful, collective effort resulted in a fresh look and brand identity that signals the University's refocus on student experience and a renewed commitment to equip graduates for life. The cornerstone of the new brand expression was the successful launch of a redesigned institutional website that serves as a critical point of engagement across all of the University's key audiences, emphasizing prospective students and their families.

As a member of TWU's strategic planning team, James participated in developing the institutional strategic plan, TWU 2030: Every Graduate Equipped, launched in 2023. He continues to play key roles in advancing strategic priorities as the University progresses in strategic plan implementation. In addition, he currently serves on a Board Standing Committee, providing expert insight and counsel to the University Board of Governors on strategic recruiting, admissions, marketing, and communications to fulfill the University's vision, mission, and strategic direction. 

The new vice president and CMO appointment also reflects Trinity Western's growth and progress and the ensuing need for increased alignment across the University, regarding brand, marketing, and communications strategy. James envisions a University-wide effort to advance and champion Trinity Western within the global higher education market.
