TWU Great Wall MBA international business program celebrates a decade of achievements with Canadian delegation visit

Equipping global leaders with entrepreneurial skills, values-based approaches, and strategic vision.

Trinity Western University has successfully provided international business education for over a decade through the Great Wall MBA program.

Specializing in training leaders to gain broad global perspective, strategic vision, and to master core business skills such as financial management and human resource management, the Great Wall MBA is delivered through TWU’s partnership with Tianjin University of Finance and Economics (TUFE), with courses taught in English by faculty experts from both universities. It is one of several MBA programs and specializations offered by Trinity Western's School of Business.

Ceremonies to honour student journeys

This fall, a delegation from Trinity Western travelled to Tianjin to host a commencement ceremony on Oct. 13 to mark the start of a new academic year for 68 students in the Great Wall MBA program.

Furthermore, a combined graduation ceremony was held on Oct. 14 to honour the achievements of 398 program graduates who successfully completed their studies in the years 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Over 200 graduates attended the Oct. 14 event; in addition, some of these graduates will travel to Langley, BC to attend the TWU fall graduation ceremony in early November.

The TWU delegation included Provost Todd Martin, Dean of the School of Business Kevin Sawatsky, Director of MBA Programs Chen Liu, and Dean of School of Human Kinetics & Athletics Blair Whitmarsh.

Leaders of both universities provided remarks at the commencement and graduation ceremonies, to encourage new students and to congratulate those who have successfully completed their studies.

TUFE President Jinlan Liu provided remarks by encouraging students to think innovatively: “The globalization of the economy not only provides global markets and resources, but also gives you the opportunity to influence the world.”

Provost Martin spoke of the shared values between the two universities, values that carry through the education that students receive. In particular, he highlighted the valuing of relational progress and not merely material goals: “Relations that detach the person from the transaction often see making money, even at the expense of relationships, as the goal. [Distinctively,] both TUFE and TWU…embraces a view that sees business as involving personal relationships of trust, respect, and mutual benefit.”

He encouraged students to “continue this shared culture of humanizing business and valuing the people we do business with, not just the business itself.”

Ten years of program achievements

The partnership between TUFE and TWU to jointly offer the Great Wall MBA program began in 2013. Since then, the program has expanded to Shanghai and Beijing and has successfully graduated hundreds of well-qualified students. As Dean Sawatsky affirms, “The growth of this program in ten years is a remarkable achievement and I believe indicates the strength of our partnership, the strength of working together.”

The TWU delegation members were honoured to be a part of the commencement and graduation ceremonies at TUFE this fall, and express gratitude for the partnership and support of TUFE leaders President Liu, Vice President Hou, Dean Gao, Director Sun, and the Great Wall MBA program staff and faculty from both universities.
